Thailand: Net Measurement Scheme for Residential Photovoltaic Start-up

Relevant power departments in Thailand have launched a net metering plan for residential solar devices with 10 KW solar systems.

The application for the plan will be submitted to the office of the Thai Energy Regulatory Commission, which will also purchase the remaining electricity generated by the roof system. The net metered tariff (set for 10 years) will be 1.68 baht/kWh (equivalent to 0.037 RMB/kWh).

The plan is part of a recently updated power development plan that will last until 2037, when renewable energy is expected to account for 35% of Thailand's energy supply.

According to the latest statistics released by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Thailand's photovoltaic installed capacity in 2018 is 2.72 GW, and is expected to reach 3.5 GW by the end of 2019.

In Thailand, 70% of the electricity supply is natural gas, 20% is coal, and only 8% is renewable energy such as wind power, hydropower and solar energy.

It is understood that Thailand will build a 10 GW roof solar systems project and a 2.725 GW floating project developed by Thailand's EGAT at nine dams by 2036.
