Solar to contribute over 60% of new U.S. electricity generation in 2024
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) released its Short-Term Energy Outlook report, predicting that total U.S. electricity generation will grow by 3% in 2024 and 1% in 2025. "Renewable energy sources - primarily solar - will provide most of the growth," the EIA said. In 2023, solar, wind and hydroelectric power combined accounted for about 21% of U.S. electricity generation. The EIA expects that figure to grow to 24% in 2025.

Solar power is the main driver of this energy transition. The EIA said that solar energy will provide 41% more electricity in 2024 than in 2023. The EIA said that the 19 gigawatts of solar power generation added in 2023 and the more than 37 gigawatts expected this year are the reasons for the significant increase in power generation. In 2025, total solar power generation is expected to increase by another 25%.
