The Indian government says the production capacity of photovoltaic modules will reach 100 GW by 2026
MNRE Secretary Bhupinder Singh Bhalla delivered a speech in New Delhi this week: "We aspire to make India a leading global supplier of renewable energy equipment
Bhalla stated that the Indian government has launched a Production Linked Incentive (PLI) program and other policy measures to comprehensively promote the construction of a solar manufacturing ecosystem.
The PLI plan will support the addition of over 48 GW of photovoltaic manufacturing capacity, covering different integration areas such as polycrystalline silicon to modules, silicon ingot wafer to modules, and battery+modules. Currently, India's annual solar photovoltaic module manufacturing capacity is 28 GW and battery capacity is 6 GW.
Bhalla stated that many companies will continue to significantly increase their production capacity on the basis of meeting the allocated capacity under the [PLI Plan].
He added, "Therefore, we estimate that by 2026, when the PLI plan is fully implemented and other manufacturing capabilities are also improved, our solar photovoltaic module manufacturing capacity is expected to reach 100 GW
India's goal is to integrate 500 GW of non fossil fuel power generation by 2030, including approximately 300 GW of solar power generation capacity. As of August 31, 2023, the country's solar installed capacity is 71.6 GW. Therefore, in order to achieve the 2030 target, India needs to add 30 to 40 GW of solar power generation annually.
